The CSLB licensing exam is taken in two separate parts: your trade-specific exam and the Law & Business exam. After CSLB approves your application, your application information is sent to PSI so you can schedule your exam date.
You must complete both parts required by CSLB. Each exam is scheduled and paid for separately through PSI.
The trade exam focuses on the classification you are applying for, such as general building, electrical, plumbing, concrete, roofing, or another CSLB trade.
The Law & Business exam covers California contractor rules, business management, contracts, safety, labor, and legal responsibilities.
PSI works directly with CSLB and operates many of the exam locations used by contractor license applicants.
CSLB reviews your contractor license application and determines whether you are approved to test.
Once approved, your CSLB application number is sent to PSI so the exam company can help you schedule your test date.
You schedule the Trade exam and the Law & Business exam separately at an available PSI testing location.
Each exam costs about $53. If you are taking both parts, expect to pay for each one separately.
If you fail either the Trade exam or the Law & Business exam, you must wait 21 calendar days before scheduling another attempt. You will also need to pay the exam fee again for the exam you are retaking.
